A recent article at Business Insider touts the diminutive Cirrus Vision Jet as a game changer in the world of private jets, although the Airbus A380 superjumbo is said to possibly be the “next big thing” in private aviation. According to the article, the Cirrus is approximately half the price of its closest jet-powered competitor at only $1.96 million.
Ben Kowalski, VP of Marketing and Communications at Cirrus, said the Vision Jet has been 10 years in the making, and is now certified by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). The first flight of the Vision Jet production model was made about one year ago, and Cirrus is now in the process of ramping up production of the tiny jet and making deliveries. Regional commercial air services and private owners are the target markets for the Vision Jet, according to Kowalski.
In the very-light jet market, the Vision Jet’s biggest competitors are the Embraer Phenom 100 and HondaJet. Featuring a V-tail rather than a traditional rudder, it features a Williams International FJ33-5A turbofan that produces 1,800 lbs. of thrust, the first private jet available with a single engine.
While there’s room for as many as five adults and two children inside the Cirrus Vision Jet, long distance flights are no problem. Capable of flying nonstop between Kansas City and Los Angeles or Dallas and New York, the new jet offers a maximum operating altitude of 28,000 and cruises at speeds of 345 mph.
