Recent news reports reveal that, while August is a peak season in terms of private jet traffic to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, jet traffic will increase dramatically on August 21 when Jackson Hole will be directly beneath the two minute, 20 second total eclipse with the partial eclipse expected to last for 2 1/2 hours or more.
Grand Teton National Park’s southern region is said to be one of the best locations for viewing the eclipse in the entire country, and is located in the Jackson Hole valley which is next to Yellowstone National Park. Not only is private jet travel expected to skyrocket; lodging, traffic, and the number of visitors to what is already a major summer vacation destination are expected to break records.
The only airport in the country located inside a national park, Jackson Hole Airport, is one of three top summer mountain resort airports and is highly popular among those who travel on private jets. News articles indicate, with the increase in private jet traffic to Jackson Hole, some aircraft may be turned away if the local FBO/private terminal ramp space fills. New Flight Charters is headquartered in Jackson Hole and monitors jet charter activity into and out of the airport; the company also arranges custom private jet flights, a number they report to be about 1,400 per year. With August 18 to 23 being the busiest time of the year for flights to and from Jackson Hole, New Flight Charters expects the activity of private charter aircraft to be as much as ten times the normal activity.
Additionally, the Jackson Hole Airport runway will be closed on August 21 for one hour in an effort to manage traffic and crowds during the total eclipse which is expected to begin at 11:35. The airport runway will close 30 minutes prior to the total eclipse, and remain closed for 30 minutes following the two to two 1/2 minute totality.
This will no doubt be a spectacular event, with people traveling from locations all over the U.S. to view the eclipse from the best vantage points.
